Taichung Half-Day Tour
The Taichung half-day tour covers Shenji New Village, Tunghai University, Luce Memorial Chapel, and Gaomei Wetlands. Shenji New Village offers cultural and creative experiences, while Tunghai University showcases unique architecture and natural landscapes.
Shenji New Village
Shenji New Village, officially known as 'Shenji New Village 368 Cultural and Creative Settlement,' is located in the West District of Taichung City, Taiwan. Originally, it was the staff dormitory for the Taiwan Provincial Government's Audit Office, but after the provincial government was frozen in 1998, it was left abandoned for many years. Later, the city government transformed it into a youth entrepreneurship base, attracting many cultural and creative entrepreneurs and businesses.
Today, Shenji New Village is a cultural and creative park full of historical and artistic vibes. Visitors can appreciate the old dormitory buildings with a sense of the era and explore unique small shops. Additionally, there are many food vendors where visitors can taste the special snacks sold at the market.
Tunghai University
Tunghai University is located at the foot of Dadu Mountain in Taichung City and is a comprehensive university with a Christian background. The campus covers an area of 135.65 hectares, making it the largest private university in terms of land area. The campus environment is beautiful, and the buildings are distinctive, making it a famous attraction in Taichung City.
There are many attractions worth visiting within Tunghai University's campus:
- **Wenli Boulevard**: This is the most famous pedestrian path on the campus. It is flanked by various colleges, named 'Wenli Boulevard' because the College of Arts and the College of Sciences were the first to be established. The boulevard is lined with trees, creating a shaded avenue.
- **Tunghai University Experimental Farm**: Covering fifty hectares, this is the largest experimental farm in the country. It raises dairy cows, sheep, pigs, and other livestock, allowing students of the College of Agriculture to not only learn in the classroom but also interact with animals on the farm. The farm is also open to the general public for visits.
- **Tunghai Dairy**: This shop sells various 'pure and rich' dairy products made on the farm, including fresh milk, yogurt, yogurt drinks, popsicles, and creamy fresh milk ice cream.
Luce Memorial Chapel
Luce Memorial Chapel is located within Tunghai University in Taichung City, Taiwan. It is a Protestant chapel designed by renowned Taiwanese architect Chen Chi-Kwan and Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. Construction began in 1962, and it was completed on November 2, 1963. It is considered the symbol of Tunghai University and one of the most famous modern buildings in Taiwan.
The design of Luce Memorial Chapel is unique, featuring four separated curved surfaces, creating a structure without columns, beams, or walls. This design allows for a fluid internal space and enables natural light to enter, creating a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. Additionally, the exterior walls are covered with yellow diamond-shaped glazed tiles, resembling the color of traditional religious buildings' roof tiles.
Luce Memorial Chapel is not only a landmark of Tunghai University but also a must-visit attraction for many tourists in Taichung. Whether on weekdays or holidays, visitors can admire this building of historical and artistic value. In 2017, the Taichung Cultural Assets Department registered Luce Memorial Chapel as a Taichung City Historic Site.
Gaomei Wetlands
Gaomei Wetlands is located at the estuary on the west side of Qingshui District, Taichung City. It is a coastal wetland formed by a combination of freshwater inflow and tidal changes. The wetland's rich and complex ecosystem includes birds, fish, crabs, and other invertebrates. Although Gaomei Wetlands is not large, its combination of mudflats and sandy beaches, along with its interspersion with estuarine marshes, nurtures more diverse and abundant species than other wetlands.
The history of Gaomei Wetlands dates back to the Japanese colonial period when it was Gaomei Beach. However, with the opening of Taichung Port, the beach gradually silted up, leading to a decline in visitors and its eventual closure. Nevertheless, the silt accumulation has created today's ecologically rich Gaomei Wetlands.
The beautiful scenery of Gaomei Wetlands attracts many tourists and photography enthusiasts. The area features well-planned bike paths, rich wetland ecology, beautiful wooden boardwalks, and sunsets. Here, visitors can enjoy spectacular sunset views and experience the wonders of nature with the changing tides.
