Shuishe Wharf
Located at the northern end of Sun Moon Lake, Shuishe Pier is the most bustling area and a popular gathering spot for visitors. It serves not only as a departure point for boat tours but also as a hub for various public transportation services, including buses and bicycle rentals.
The name ""Shuishe Pier"" originates from the language of the local indigenous Thao tribe. In the Thao language, ""Shuishe"" means ""water's edge,"" reflecting the region's profound connection with water. The Thao people, the original inhabitants of Sun Moon Lake, have an inseparable bond with the lake, deeply entwined in their lifestyle and culture.
Historically, Sun Moon Lake was an important site for the Thao people. However, in 1934, the Japanese colonial government established Taiwan's first large-scale hydroelectric power station here, making the lake even more renowned. Today, this power station still operates and has become a popular tourist attraction.
The scenic landscape at Shuishe Pier is truly captivating. From the pier, you can appreciate the full view of Sun Moon Lake, its mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding mountains, creating a pleasing vista. It is also an excellent spot for witnessing the sunrise and sunset. As the sun rises or sets, the lake turns golden, presenting a breathtaking sight.
Moreover, many historical landmarks and attractions are situated around Shuishe Pier, such as Wenwu Temple and Thao Cultural Village. You can delve into the history and culture of the Thao people and appreciate the unique architectural style here.
Xuanzang Temple
Xuanzang Temple, nestled on the banks of Sun Moon Lake, is a sanctuary dedicated to Master Xuanzang. During the Sino-Japanese war, the Japanese took away the parietal relic of Master Xuanzang. After the war, some relics were given to the Buddhist Association of the Republic of China and were brought to Taiwan in 1955, finally being enshrined in Xuanzang Temple.
The temple, designed in Tang architectural style, exudes understated elegance, reflecting the tranquility of ancient times. Due to its proximity to Sun Moon Lake, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake, as if immersed in a picturesque landscape.
Just a short stroll of ten meters from the lake, Xuanzang Temple has its own pier where visitors can arrive by boat. The temple not only enshrines a golden statue of Master Xuanzang but also features a plaque honoring him as a ""National Master"". Although the parietal relic has been moved to Xuanzang Temple, Xuanzang Temple remains a must-visit spot at Sun Moon Lake.
Grandma’s Tea Eggs
Grandma’s Tea Eggs, located next to the Ita Thao Pier in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, is one of the most famous snacks at Sun Moon Lake. The shop uses Sun Moon Lake black tea leaves, mushrooms, star anise, and other spices to create tea eggs with a rich aroma and a chewy texture, which are deeply loved by tourists.
The founder of Grandma's Tea Eggs was Grandma Jinpen, whose real name was Chen Jinpen. Originally selling fruit at Sun Moon Lake, she later switched to selling tea eggs and gradually gained popularity. After Grandma Jinpen passed away, her family took over the business and renamed the shop 'Grandma Jinpen's Mushroom Tea Eggs'.
Here are the features of Grandma's Tea Eggs:
Made with Sun Moon Lake black tea: Sun Moon Lake black tea is a famous tea in Taiwan, known for its rich aroma and lingering aftertaste. Grandma's Tea Eggs are made with this tea, giving the eggs a unique tea fragrance.
Added with various spices like mushrooms: In addition to Sun Moon Lake black tea, Grandma's Tea Eggs also incorporate mushrooms, star anise, and other spices, making the aroma of the tea eggs even richer.
Chewy texture: The tea eggs are perfectly stewed, with a chewy egg white and a rich egg yolk, making you want to keep eating.
Ita Thao Old Street
Once the home of the Thao tribe, known as Dehua Community, this place becomes a hub of activity during the annual Thao Ancestor Worship Festival held in the eighth lunar month. The Ita Thao Pier, one of the three major piers of Sun Moon Lake, serves as the starting point for visitors to experience the lake's scenic beauty. At the pier plaza, you can enjoy indigenous cultural performances, immersing yourself in the captivating Thao music and dance.
Wandering through the Ita Thao shopping district, you'll find the liveliest hub for shopping and culinary delights at Sun Moon Lake. The orderly streets are lined with shops, B&Bs, and restaurants offering a variety of unique dishes. Don't miss out on trying indigenous delicacies like wild boar sausages, millet mochi, millet wine, and bamboo rice for an extraordinary gastronomic experience. Remember to savor the renowned Sun Moon Lake black tea, with the fragrant and lingering taste of Ruby Black Tea, and the delicious black tea egg rolls. These will surely become unforgettable memories of your journey.
Ci En Pagoda
Ci En Pagoda, an emblem of Sun Moon Lake, nestles within the central mountains of Taiwan. Erected in 1969, this 46-meter tall pagoda was built in memory of Chiang Kai-shek's mother. From its peak, the breathtaking view of Sun Moon Lake unfolds, with the northeastern part resembling a sun and the southwestern part, a moon. It's said that wishes made here come true.
The journey along the trail, from the parking lot to the base of the pagoda, is surrounded by lush greenery and towering ancient trees. The cool and pleasant atmosphere in summer, coupled with the gentle stone-paved path marked with distance signs every 100 meters, leads you to the pagoda before you know it.
Madame Chiang's Memorial Hall, located opposite the pagoda, showcases the history of Ci En Pagoda and Chiang Kai-shek's handwritten instructions. Encircled by plum trees, the hall is enveloped by the sweet scent of blooming plum flowers in winter.
Visitor Information: Ci En Pagoda is open daily from 09:00 to 16:30. The trail may be temporarily closed due to natural disasters or maintenance.
Wenwu Temple
Wenwu Temple, situated on the picturesque northern shore of Sun Moon Lake, was a merger and relocation of two temples due to a Japanese power project in 1934, rebuilt on Songbolun. In 1969, it was reconstructed in the style of Northern China's architecture, becoming a grand and majestic temple.
Wenwu Temple is divided into three halls. The front hall, Shuiyun Palace, enshrines the founding ancestors and Wenchang Emperor, among others. The central hall, Wusheng Hall, venerates Guan Yu and Yue Fei, while the rear hall, Dacheng Hall, honors Confucius. A unique feature of Dacheng Hall is its open central door and the only bronze statue of Confucius in Taiwan.
The temple's location, with a hill behind and facing the lake, makes it an excellent viewpoint. Visitors can ascend to the viewing platform at the rear hall to gaze at Sun Moon Lake and experience the grandeur of embracing the world.
Wenwu Temple, which combines Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, symbolizes religious culture and perfectly blends Taiwan's natural beauty and cultural history. Whether for religious devotion or appreciation of nature and culture, Wenwu Temple is a must-visit attraction.
